Strategists working on a whiteboard

You probably know what a UX Designer does, so this is not an exhaustive list of the requirements or responsibilities for the job. This is a description of the types of things UX Designers at COLAB do, along with some of the qualities they typically possess. This job description should help you gain an understanding of whether you are a good fit for the role, and if COLAB is a good fit for you.

As an employee at COLAB, your primary responsibility is to collaborate with your colleagues to drive successful outcomes for our clients. Period. How you achieve that will vary from project to project. We hope that prospect is as exciting to you as it is to us.

A Day in the Life

As a UX Designer at COLAB, you can expect to be doing these types of activities on a regular basis:

  • Meet with UX Strategist to discuss the necessary features and functionality for the project
  • Conduct user research and competitive analysis
  • Perform heuristic site or application audits and analyze data from various measurement tools in order to provide insights on user behavior and identify recommended design changes
  • Distill concepts and requirements into UX artifacts such as site maps, user journey maps, process flows, user personas, wireframes, and low-fidelity prototypes in order to demonstrate and guide the project vision to fit within the project’s budget and timeline
  • Present deliverables to UX Strategist and project team members
  • Research and employ the adoption of UX best practices specifically for websites and web applications
  • Minimize unnecessary complexity within a project and work to increase efficiency in cases where standards are established
  • Collaborate with developers to create a functional specification, documenting the approach and the intended functionality of the wireframes and prototypes
  • Effectively prioritize projects, manage and execute tasks, and communicate with the project management team, delivering projects on time and on budget
  • Collaborate with digital strategists, visual designers, developers, and quality assurance analysts to ensure the design and implementation of the product meets the vision of the original intention and business goals
  • Be forward-thinking and identify potential future opportunities through recommended enhancements, functionality, or improvements for later stages

About You

Here are some qualities that should ring true for you as a strong candidate for a UX Designer role at COLAB:

  • You see people as human beings rather than users, and you take great care in making things usable for everyone
  • You love the web as a medium for communication
  • You have a refined sense for balancing creativity with practical usability
  • You have the ability to articulate decisions to a variety of audiences
  • You are good at finding workable compromises, negotiating tactics with visual designers and developers to find solutions to fit within constraints
  • You have a great understanding of content management (WordPress and Drupal specifically)
  • You have a strong understanding of technical level of effort and complexity and in particular, how they affect the scope of a project
  • You do your best work when you collaborate closely with colleagues and clients
  • You take immense pride in your craft

These are the things that no one ever puts on a job description, but always expects, so we’re just going to say it here:

  • Be open to communication, debate and discussion
  • Treat others with respect, trust, and kindness
  • Execute work with precision
  • Ask questions and challenge others when necessary
  • Solve difficult problems with vigor
  • Handle tough circumstances with grace
  • Seek feedback on opportunities for improvement
