In so many ways, 2017 was COLAB’s best year yet. Looking back, we’re proud of all we’ve accomplished. We can’t wait to build upon our progress in 2018. Let’s take a deeper dive into our 2017 reflections and 2018 projections:
As always, our collaboration with our clients is front and center as we look back at the past 12 months. Here is a selection of some of the most interesting and challenging projects we’ve delivered:
In addition to these projects, we also launched 21 new websites and applications, worked with more than 30 new clients and had the opportunity to expand our capabilities by working with a number of new technologies, including AWS services (state machines, lambda, elasticsearch), Twilio, Vue.js, React, Swift, and an Alexa app.
Culture and Special Events
In addition to the top-quality work we delivered, we also placed a special emphasis on further developing our company culture in 2017. Our team’s ability to come together to solve complex problems is one of the most important aspects of COLAB, and we couldn’t do that without a healthy and fun work environment.
Last year, we created and rolled out a monthly culture initiative (affectionately dubbed MO’LAB - “Mo” for more) to offer opportunities for our team to share experiences and grow closer outside of the time we dedicate to project work. We held a doubles ping pong tournament, a chili cook-off and a Halloween costume/pumpkin carving contest at the office, and also took a team field trip to The Diamond to watch a Flying Squirrels game.
One of our favorite moments from last year was a visit from Mayor Stoney, who stopped by our office for an informal, but informative discussion about technology, jobs, and the future of our Richmond community.
The awesome team we’ve been able to build also led to COLAB receiving recognition in 2017 from Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the 360 most entrepreneurial companies in the nation and, for the second year in a row, the ICIC Inner City 100 list of the fastest growing companies from inner cities across the country. To say we’re honored is an understatement.
New COLAB Branding
If you’ve been following us on Facebook (or checked out that excellent Mayor Stoney blog post - hint hint), you’ve probably noticed a new logo, brand colors and some pretty sweet t-shirts. With all of the growth and progress we’ve made over the past few years, we felt it was time for our brand to get a refresher to reflect who we are today, as well as where we’re headed. Here’s a look at our previous logo, which has served us well since 2010:

With this new brand, we wanted to create a timeless logomark with a more distinct color palette. Additionally, the update needed to reflect our concentration on technology, as well as our maturity as a business. The previous logo was created when COLAB was a three year-old company with 3.5 employees working out of a 150 sq ft cubicle. While our foundation of good values and providing quality holds true, our company today has evolved into something totally different! We’re so fortunate to have been able to grow our business over the past ten years to include a multitalented team (there are 18 of us now!), vastly improved capabilities and talents, and room to grow in our new space.
